Hello Instagram lovers! Today Instagram announced that they will be allowing auto-scheduling.
But wait!!! There’s a catch.
Let me tell you everything you need to know.
The new Instagram update (new API)
Let me quickly explain to you what’s going on.
Instagram has just released a new API (= a new system / new Policy). This new API is called the “Business API”.
Companies can now use this “Business API” to build apps that auto-post for Instagram Business accounts.
If you didn’t know, Instagram did not allow auto-posting before. It was against their Policy and could get your account banned, blocked or penalized.
Now, their new system allows companies to build auto-scheduling apps – only if they use the Instagram “Business API”.
Please beware of companies that offer tools that auto-schedule for you but don’t use this API. They are still breaking the rules.
Here is what you need to know about this new change:
Scheduling Instagram posts automatically is… very limited
Here’s the catch. For now:
- Auto-posting will be only available for people who have a business profile
- Instagram will not allow auto-posting for videos
- Instagram will not allow auto-posting for carousels (multiple photos in one post)
- You won’t be able to set a location tag
- You won’t be able to tag users on your photos (you can only tag in your caption)
Note: We will add the auto-scheduling feature in Preview app.
What if you don’t have a business profile… or don’t want to switch to a business profile?
If you don’t have a business profile or don’t want to switch to a business profile: don’t worry. You won’t be affected by this change.
However if you want to schedule your posts automatically, then you have to switch to a business profile.

I don’t think the auto-posting feature will work in my favor. However, this is only because tagging other businesses and setting location tags is key to my feed. I run a coffee and dessert centric Instagram account based in Seattle, WA. Being able to tag local businesses and set locations is important to connecting with my audience. However, I think the auto-posting feature will work nicely for those who are not as concerned with these things.
Well this is great for me as I spend long amounts of time in the wilderness, and a post is better than nothing. Event if it has to sacrifice the geotag and tagging people.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as a business, I cannot build such an app without applying for Instagram Business Partner program first. Otherwise I’d need to subscribe to a 3rd party service provider for scheduled posts. I’d build the app, but the real question is – am I putting my business account at risk to be blocked when using API features for autoposts without the approval? The app would not be intended for public use – however Instagram doesn’t seem to allow a “solo-developer” using the scheduled posts API for own business. That’s kinda unfair. I’d be happy to find out I’m wrong.
When will you add the autopost feature to the preview app?
my thoughts exactly. Been waiting since January when they said they were adding it but looks like it might be time to move to another platform :/ shame cause I liked this one.
